[dropcap type=”box”]T[/dropcap]he people, events, and conflicts leading up to The Hundred Years’ war involved popes and kings of Germany and France. Frederick Barbarossa of Germany and Philip IV of France all played key roles in conflicts involving the power of individual governments and the power of the church. Eventually, the individual countries within The Holy Roman Empire realized they were capable of governing themselves apart from the church. This eventually led to continued conflict over who had rights to the throne and a claim by Edward III to the French throne which sparked the beginning of The Hundred Years War.
