Unit Description
The struggle over the question of slavery was a long and bitter one. John C. Calhoun, Daniel Webster and Henry Clay were all on the forefront of this battle. Finally both the North and the South agreed to give up a apart of what they wanted and this was demonstrated in the Missouri Compromise. However, peace was still not to be had. Increased tariffs and taxes on the South led to increased conflict and the state of South Carolina threatened to secede from the Union and form a separate nation
