Benjamin-FranklinUnit Description

It’s been said that great leaders are forged on the anvil of trying circumstance. America’s founding fathers provide shining examples for us of patriots who overcame tremendous obstacles to win liberty and establish principles of democracy—for us, the generations of the future. This unit will focus on Benjamin Franklin, one of the principal figures involved in the birth and shaping of the American nation, and renowned by many as the First Citizen of the Eighteenth Century.

Leading Ideas and Biblical Principles

[list type=”arrow”]

  • History is HIS Story – God’s story of love, mercy, and redemption through Christ.
    • He made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ. — Ephesians 1‍:‍9-10
  • God’s providential hand governs and times all events and provides for His Creation according to His plan and purposes.
    • The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.  And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.- Acts 17: 24 – 27

Literature Assignment

  • Read the chapters entitled “Woburn 1740-1779,” “Journey to Keene 1779,” and “The Arrival at Jaffrey” in Amos Fortune, Free Man.

Composition Assignment

  • View “Colonial Slavery Image 2” in the Resources section of the website. As before, spend several minutes in silence, examining the details, and allowing your mind to consider what might be happening in this picture. This time, you will write a diary entry, which is basically a record of events to help a person remember events or experiences that they have had.
    • You will begin with “Dear Diary,” and the rest will sound a little bit like a letter that you write to yourself.
This time, you should describe the image and then write about what your thoughts and feelings are about this image today.
    • How does it make you feel? Does it remind you of anything in particular? What do you think each of the people in the image are thinking? If you could sum up this image in one single word, what would it be?
  • Just as you did with the last image, go back to both this image and your writing on a separate day, and try to add more thoughts and feelings to your writing that are inspired by this image. It’s okay if your writing looks messy and has crossed out and inserted words and sentences at this point! Again, instead of editing right now, just put this writing into your folder and save it for the end of the unit.
