Thomas-JeffersonUnit Description

This unit tells the story of Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, principal author of the Declaration of Independence. After he became President of the United States, he purchased the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon. This greatly increased the size of the United States and provided us with shipping rights of passage by way of the Mississippi River.

Literature and Composition Assignments

  • Read Chapters 11 – 15 in Sign of the Beaver.

Composition Assignment

  • Write the rough draft of your research book. You should do this on notebook paper, even though the final draft will be done in a blank book. Each one of your subtopics should become at least one paragraph, and you should have a minimum of ten paragraphs when you are finished; however, feel free to make your book lengthier if you’d like. Use the following approach:
    • Make sure your note cards are organized into the order in which you will use them in your book.
    • Work through the writing of your research book by following your outline and referring to the information in your organized note cards. You won’t be able to just copy those note cards in order; you will need to fit your information together so that it sounds natural. Remember to use at least one quote.
    • Finish with some final, general thoughts about your colony.
  • If you’d like to make your paper even more “polished,” include parenthetical citations within your paper. These are references within your paper that tell the source of your information; they are very simple to add as you are writing, and will help better prepare you for the writing that you will do in middle school and beyond. You will find links with explanations on how to handle different types of sources within the Resources section of the website.
